I started my car last night and it made a rattling noise.?

Before I got even half a mile, I couldn't steer it any more I popped the hood and the s belt is off the pulleys, but I had the pulley and tension replaced last April. Any ideas? I'm calling my mechanic Monday but just waiting is driving me nuts. Could it be the power steering pump? Thanks.

Update:

Thanks but I trust my mechanic I've gone to him for 15 rys I know he wouldn't lie to me. I checked my fluid and its fine.

Update 2:

Just curious guys if the fluid was leaking on the belt, does that mean the pump is bad or the thing that holds the fluid?

Your steering got stiff due to the belt popping off the pulley system. Just because the tension er got changed a year ago doesn't mean it didn't go bad. Things do happen. ALWAYS ask for the old parts back to prove they actually changed them. Get your tension er rechecked and make sure the belt didn't snap.

Secondly, make sure you aren't leaking power steering fluid onto the belt. This can also make the belt slide off very easily. I have seen it done.

EDIT: The pump and reservoir usually come as a complete unit. There is a pressure line and a return line that connects into the pump and reservoir. Check the connection on those for signs of leakage.
