what type of chemical reaction takes place in smokestack scrubbers?

2 SO2 (g) + 2 CaCO3(s) + 4 H2O --> 2 CaSO4 •2H2(s) + 2 H2CO3 (aq)

Update:

the only problem is that it is supsosed to form ..

Sulfur dioxide + mixture of powdered limestone and water --- synthetic form of the mineral gypsum

and gypsum is this part of the equation 2 CaSO4 •2H2(s) so that is why i have the equation above

What do you think?

    The sulfur dioxide and water will combine to form a sulfuric acidic solution. This process can be seen at the website below.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_rain

    Sulfur dioxide and water combine to form sulfuric acid. The acid reacts with the calcium carbonate to produce calcium sulfate and hydrogen carbonate. This is a double replacement reaction as shown below.

    H2SO4 + CaCO3 → CaSO4 + H2CO3

    This is a double replacement reaction.

    Calcium sulfate is stable as a hydrated crystal. So 2 H2O will bond to the CuSO4 forming CaSO4 •2H2O.

    This is a hydration reaction.

    The result is the reaction equation below.

    H2SO4 + CaCO3 + 2 H2O → CaSO4 + H2CO3

    The equation that you have is 2 times this equation!
