I just bought a '74 VW bug autoshift?

Whenever I put it into gear (in particular, reverse) it lags for a second or two then jerks really hard when it does go into gear. That said, could this possibly be the pressure plate going out or just the entire transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That lag could be due to a dirty/clogged tranny fluid filter.

Go here and poke around the forums for the best info/advice on this transmission.

Usually they lag in drive. Make sure your trans fluid is clean and full. There are some adjustments you can make - look on the Internet or find a good mechanic.

well now you know why the person sold it because they did not want to pay to fix it. There was not a whole lot of these around even in 74 I hope you got a good deal because it sounds likely you are going to get to pay for some repair work. hope it works out ok.
