It would help a lot to know the context of the word.

"Excelsior" is from the latin word meaning "Higher." As a motto it means, "Ever upward."

It is also a packing material (long wood shavings).

There are poems with this title, by Longfellow and Whitman.

It is also the name of tiny 3 pt.type.

There is a Mexican newspaper called Excelsior.

There was a starship named Excelsior in StarTrek.

There is a chess problem called the Excelsior.

There are many more usages. Like I said, it would help a lot to know the context.
