Calculating yield of Aluminium Acac?

4g of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate was disssolved in 25cm^3 of water and 1.25g of acetylacetone was added, conc ammonia was added dropwise until the solution was slightly alkaline. What should the theoretical yield of aluminium acac be?

    First write the equation

    AlNO3.9H2O + acetylacetone = AlAcac

Under the equation write the moles of each component in the reaction

1, 1, 1 (these should be lined up under the components but the display will not allow it)

Then the molecular weight of the components

    375, 100, 324

    The weights you took

    4g, 1.25g

Calculate the number of moles use

    10.66mM (4/375) 12.5mM (1.25/100)

Because 1 mole AlNO3 reacts with 1 mole acetylacetone the maximum amout of product that can be produced is 10.66mM of AlAcac, which has a mass of 3.45g (10.66*324)

    Theoretical yield is 3.45g

Reaction yield = Weight AlAcac isolated / Theoretical yield
