What are the Harlem Globetrotters?

The Globetrotters are a Basketball team that have their early beginnings on the Chicago South side in the early 1920s. They were young talented Black athletes who wanted to showcase their skills but weren't able to play against white teams in organized leagues.

It was not until the late 60s however that the Globetrotters became a true comedy entertainment show. Prior to that they focused more on sport and athleticism.

The reason the team chose the Name "Harlem Globetrotters" is because since the team was predominantly made up of Black athletes over the years, they wanted people to know right away by their name the team was a team of Black American Ball Players, so in the U.S. the team figured what in our culture would be perceived as more Black American than "Harlem". Also the Globetrotter part of the name was provided to add an international feel, even though at that time they were strictly a U.S. performing team. It was not until the 1960s that the team finally headquartered them selves in Harlem NY. The Globetrotters have also performed on every continent of the globe, along with command Royal Performances, and also for many heads of state. This makes them one of the most traveled and respected entertainment franchises in the world.

The Dream Team. If you noticed, the Globetrotters don't play by the same rules (travel, tricks, etc...) Not to mention, a lot of the Globetrotters are retired NBA stars who couldn't play actual season games because they are can't compete anymore due to the age factor. So this is a fun basketball venue for them. But in a game, 1992 Dream Team was the best basketball team ever formed and thus would win without a doubt.

They are what I would describe as a performing arts basketball team. They put on a show for entertainment purposes at basketball arenas nationwide (probably worldwide) that is based around a game of basketball with many tricks and pranks being pulled on the opposing team. They are pretty good and funny!

A Basketball team that does trick shots and funny stuff while playing basketball and fans get involved.
