You can put a laptop drive in a desktop (my newest one from last week has one) but you cannot go the other way.

Laptop hard drives are 2.5 inches; desktop are 3.5 inches so they physically will not fit.

No a desktop hard drive is 3.5" and a laptop is 2.5", What makes you think the hard drive is down? You don't need a hard drive to boot up a computer, There are several things you could do.

Make a boot able CD/DVD or a USB boot able jump drive, then boot up your computer with that, you can do everything you can do with an hard drive installed, you can get on the internet and surf the web, You have a lot to learn about computers, you might as well start now, windows is not the only operating system in the world.

Go to this website download the latest April 26th 2012 operating systems. Make a boot up cd/dvd disk or USB jump drive, and use that to boot up your computer, then you can check if the hard drive is down. It may be that the master boot record is corrupted and all it need is formatting which is most probably the case,

Sure, wrap it on the bottom with a duct tape since it won't fit on the housing and make custom cables to connect it.
