Atheists: If aliens were discovered and also believed in God, would this sway you?

Let's assume here they also have no scientific evidence but came to the same conclusion in the existence of God.

Don't read any further into this question. I realise it doesn't prove anything. Just wondering is all.

No, if they had no evidence this would probably just show they had similar brains to us with a tendency to anthropomorphise things and want answers even if they had to make them up. Unless they had the same god as one of ours and our species had never met? That would be something worth looking into.

No. Richard Dawkins explained the psychological predisposition that can manifest itself in the form of religion. Aliens might believe in gods for the same reason humans do. Indoctrination, wishful thinking, ignorance, the need to control massive populations, just plain being high on weed etc.

No it wouldn't. I still need some hard evidence. If the aliens had evolved in the same way as humans they may well have developed some form of god to explain the things they did not understand just as we did.

"Let's assume here they also have no scientific evidence"

Just because of that I'd say it's evidence towards the idea that "religious thinking" was once an advantage and a result of the evolution of consciousness. I wouldn't say it would prove it, but it would point in that sort of direction.

No it wouldn't. I'm not swayed by what other people (or planets) BELIEVE, I'm swayed by what they can PROVE.

But since these aliens presumably believe in a deity completely different to the one followed by god-botherers on our own world, it would tend to suggest that neither of them are right.

No; religion has been formed by many/most human civilizations in the Earth's history, and each religion evolved in its own manner until it was replaced by another religion or vice versa. This means that even if aliens did make contact, it would be highly egotistical that they had the same sort of religion as people on Earth.

No, not if they also lacked evidence to support their position.

If they were in direct communication with God and could demonstrate that it wasn't some sort of Wizard of Oz type dealy then I'd consider it.

Not unless they can give conclusive evidence, but not even any of the millions of christians can do that.

So do they have any actual evidence?

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that one. They are going to laugh at you the same way we laugh at the religions of the tribes we've come across.

If aliens believed in vishnu rather than your god would that sway you?
