what makes a pond a pond and lake a lake ?

i have seen some really big ponds and really small lakes. what makes the difference ?

    It seems to depend as to whom you ask. Not the most helpful of responses but see below.

    Ponds are generally small, shallow lakes; the criterion for differentiating between ponds and lakes is usually temperature. Ponds have a more consistent temperature throughout; while lakes, because they are deeper, have a stratified temperature structure that depends on the season.

    The main difference between lakes and ponds is size, but ponds are also usually artifically created and are not natural. Lakes are deeper and larger bodies of water that can influence local climate if large enough. Ponds are much smaller than lakes and usually have the same temperature from top to bottom, whereas lakes can have dramatically different temperatures from the surface to the bottom waters. Also, rather than affecting local climate, ponds are usually greatly affected by local conditions.

    a pond is isolated from any other source of water. a lake has a river or stream of whatever flowing in the the lake.
