Maths boffins, can you work out this percentage for an exam weighting?
Right so after asking 4 different people and each coming up with a different answer i was wondering if you could help.
We have recently completed a piece of coursework weighing 40% and the exam weighs 60%
i need 40% overall to pass
I have got 58% for the CW, (weighing 40%)
So my question is what is the minimum i need to get in my exam which weighs 60%?

you have got 58% in ur CW which account for 40%
this means u have got 58% x 40% (or 0.58 x 0.40) = 0.232 = 23.2% out of the 40%
now, u need a minimum of 40% to pass so, u need to get at least 16.8% (40-23.2) to pass. as ur exam accounts for 60%, u have to get a mark of 16.8/60 (=0.28 = 28%)
just to conclude , percentage from cw = 58% x 40% = 23.2%
percentage from exam = 28% x 60% = 16.8%
so, 16.8% + 23.2% = 40%
