Are natural empathizers more prone to social anxiety disorders?

Since they tend to be more in tune with the feelings of others, are they more bombarded, when around a lot of people, with all the information they're getting from people's expressions and body language than the average person?

Update:

@Bob- I've never equated trivial conversation en masse with anxiety and I'm not sure why the two would be connected, but you could be on to something there. I have had off and on bouts with social anxiety and I also tend toward heavy conversation over light trivial stuff. Sometimes I wonder if I should work on my light conversation skills. Maybe its a vital part of interaction.

    I'm not sure it's that.

Personally I feel that empathizers get anxious in crowds because generally the overall level of communication is a lot more trivial and superficial in group settings than when they are one-on-one with someone in a more personal setting.

The large number of people, combined with the lack of richness of communication may be what makes for the sense of anxiety. Getting off in a quiet corner where they can talk more personally with just one person is often what helps them feel better.

Source(s): As an empathizer, I'm definitely one of those "the less the merrier" kind of people, when it comes to crowds.

I guess im an empathizer..yes it can be kinda distracting when around so many people, but it would only be reaally overwhelming/anxious when said large group of people are particularly stressed/angry. Its not too bad though, you kinda make it sound like a sixth sense and really its not, its just that you are more observant of others emotions through appearence

    Source(s): empathizer..?
