Can someone briefly explain WHY the Falkland Islands are British, when they are so close to Argentina please?
THIS IS A SERIOUS ENQUIRY, I'm not trying to be controversial, I just want to understand about it please.

(1) The Falkland Islands are 300 miles away from Argentina. On the basis of proximity, Argentina has a stronger claim to Chile and Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands should all be part of the UK (which is silly)
(2) The British settled the islands when they were uninhabited and before the modern state of Argentina had even been created
(3) The people who live in the islands are British and have made it very clear that they don't want anything to do with Argentina - and we do all claim to be democracies
(4) Over 90% of the Argentinian population is European and they speak Spanish. Why are they there? Why isn't Argerntina handed back to the native population?
@Lil: England isn't an island.

By far most of the islanders are of British ancestry (with Scottish and Welsh being very prevalent). When British people started settling there the islands were not inhabited and they were not Argentina's at all.
The islanders have full British citizenship and that is the way they want to remain.
Argentina have no legit claims to the Falkland Islands and proximity has nothing to do with things like that. I mean if proximity is a good or remotely legit argument then why doesn't Singapore belong to Malaysia etc etc.
Besides by far most people from Argentina are full European in ancestry so what rights do they have to that land? Why don't they give that back to the natives?

The Falklands are far, far away from Argentina and Argentina never had any claim or interest in the islands until Britain built a naval base there.

Mainly because despite its dire financial state, the British government still desires to hold on to the colonial past. Secondly because the seas around the Falkland Islands are full of oil and British oil companies want to take it

The people that live there are English and they want to remain with England. Others argue that because they are close to Argentina they should be part of it. The islands are a disputed territory!
