It can be extremely traumatic and she may never recover fully. The world will seem like a far more dangerous place to her now, all the stability and security she felt about the world is gone. The effects of rape emotionally are so serious and devestating which is why it is such a serious crime. It can effect everything in your life and in many cases it can destroy a lives, many rape victims commit suicide. A very common effect is self blame, where they blame themselves for the incident and loose all sense of worth. They feel like the world hates them. Can you imagine how terrifying and violating it would be to have someone force you down and raping you for their own pleasure with no consideration or care for your wellbeing or safety, actually enjoying your suffering and pain? All you can do is support her, hope she pulls through in the end.

The problem usually is that the victim has experienced a total loss of self-determination, you been violently reduced to an 'item' by the attacker.

That violent loss of self, is usually what's hardest to get over.

Keep emphasizing that what happened TO her, doesn't DEFINE her. She's always been herself, and still is, she just had a terrible encounter with a violent criminal.
