Creature would better be translated creation, as the context makes clear.
What it is saying is that this present state of creation is now subject to futility, since everything degrades, deteriorates and dies; but that in a future creation this will no longer be the case.
this is our hope:
" Then I (John)saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will but through him that subjected it, on the basis of hope that the creation itself also will be set free from enslavement to corruption and have the glorious freedom of the children of God.

The "Creature" refers to the Human Race, and Verse 24 says that we are Saved by Hope. I think this verse is referring to the people who are lead astray of the path of God, basically the people who have yet to Accept Christ as their Savior.

Doesn't make sense to me, but why should it, it's from the bible.
