How long can your car be impounded for expired tags in CA?

    As long as it takes for you to get your car legally registered and to pay the impound fees. If you leave your car there too long, the towing company can auction it off to recoup their losses, so I'd get on that ASAP.

    For as long as it takes you to get it registered and pay the impound fees

    For as long as it takes you to renew the tags but there is a limit. If you wait too long the car can be declared abandoned and sold.
