I have heard that chocolate for human consumtion is poisonous to dogs. Is this true?

And dog chocolates are awful if you've ever tried them. Sticks to the roof of your mouth.

Yes it is true. Chocolate contains theobromine which is poisonous to dogs, and the darker the chocolate the higher the theobromine content.

Poisoning is related to the amount of theobromine consumed and the dog's weight, which means that small dogs can receive a fatal dose with even small amounts of dark chocolate, but bottom line is to never give your dog chocolate, even if it is milk chocolate and you have a Great Dane.

I've never tried dog chocolates, but I know my dog is not keen on them either. She would eat real chocolate if she was allowed to, though. There are lots of other safe and healthy treats for dogs, so I just stick to these.

Yes!! Chocolate is severely toxic to dogs because it contains theobromine. This is a stimulant that effects the nervous system and heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination.

    It can result in death!!

Yes as others have said but having said that my shih tzu ate three quarters of family sized block of milk chocolate and had black poo for a day and didn't seem much the worse for it.

Yes, as with Grapes, Raisins, Onions, Caffeine and Alcohol. They all contain toxins that are bad for dogs.

Here is a list of other foods to avoid.
