What do you consider an average MLB batting average nowadays?

I consider .250 to be average, .200 to be low, and .300 to be high. What about you? Is there an exact normal batting average?

Last season, the median team average was .253, but the mode was .244 and the mean was .255. The range of averages was 0.05, with the high average being .283 and the low, .233.

So it would seem that "normal" would be .255 while a "high" average would be >.283 and a "low" average would be <.233.

    Huh.

According to Baseball-Reference.com (if I'm reading it right), MLB as a whole is batting .250, on the nose. Therefore, that is the 'average' batting average.

So, yeah, I'd have to agree with you.

Here's something fun: in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher), the MLB average was .237. The New York Yankees 'hit' .214.

In 1930, the National League hit .303. .303! On six teams, a .300 hitter would be bringing DOWN the team's average!

    Point is, offense fluctuates.

ok, .3 hundred traditionally has been the mark of a solid batting customary, and .two hundred and under has been a bad one. the common batting customary (a mouthful) has long gone up from .260 to .275 or so in the final numerous years, so as that has effects on perceptions. A .250 customary was once ok; now it extremely is particularly under that. an incredible hitter would be above .330 or so, and .370 or above comes up approximately as quickly as a decade if that (counting on the last decade). another factor: expectancies substitute on place. A catcher or shortstop oftentimes can get away with a decrease customary, because of the fact he performs a key line of defense.

Fortunately, there are actual stats out there, so I don't have to consider or guess.

I can see what the league batting average is, and consider that average. I can also look at averages per position... because certain spots should be better hitters than others.

Now a days if a team can pencil in .275-.280 they will be pleased as long as you have some clutch hits and are shining in some other areas like team chemistry or gold glove defense. Parra for Arizona perfect example

It's hard to get a good average because some players only get one at bat a season, get a hit, so their average is 1.000. Others bat 7 times and get one hit so they have a .125. But for starters who play everyday, around .285. If you get too much lower, you won't be a starter anymore.

I think .275 is where the bar should be set
