a question about apples?

so i bought a bag of apples about a month ago, and sure enough being the person i am, never touched them, so now i have a craving for fruits and founds the apples that have been in the fridge for a month, never got out. now when i opened it and took one out, it had a slimy feel to it, so i washed it very well, then i got a paper towel and wiped the water off , now it doesnt feel slimy anymore, and when i cut it open it looked perfectly fine. it this apple ok to eat? whats the average life span of an apple in the fridge? and in general, how long do fruits last in the fridge, and would it possibly be more harmful to eat?

thanks in advance :)

Never mind the outside. If the inside looks okay, you're good to go. If it was spoiled, you'd know because the inside would be brown and soft. Apples keep a long long time if refrigerated, months, at least most varieties do. Even if they look shrivelled they are still safe to eat as long as the inside is still firm and more or less white and not brown and soft. They often put an edible wax on apples which helps preserve them from drying out, makes them shiny too. That might be what you felt as "slimy".

When the fruit starts its journey to the store it's been on the road a long time, Then it's stored in a warehouse before ending up on the store shelves. So when you get it home probably a month is the longest it should be stored. If I have old apples instead of eating them raw I peel and remove the core and slice them into chunks and cook them in a boiler pot with water a little sugar, lemon juice and ground nutmeg and cinnamon. They are great that way. The spices add a nice zing to the apples. You can have them for breakfast or with ice cream for dessert. :)

From what I understand, even if you were to eat spoiled fruits or veggies, the bacteria that spoils them won't make you sick (heard this from an expert on bacteria). But like the others said, stored correctly apples (and many other fruits and veggies) can last a long time. They just turn a little ugly, eventually... ;-) Next time, open the bag to let them air. If you don't want to eat them raw, just make something from them.

If the inner fruit is still fresh and no signs of rot or spoilage, it is safe to consume. Just make sure you wash the outside completely and thoroughly because the "slimy" could be any number of bacteria including some that are deadly.

Probably not as good as eating it fresh but if it didn't smell sour I guess its ok.

I believe they used to cart apples in ships in the old days as they stored for a long time. The cold air in your fridge would extend that.

My mom used to harvest apples when they got ripe and put them in the cellar until they were gone. I ate apple pie all winter and into the spring when the strawberries came in. And I'm not even that old! They're fine. Stop wasting paper towels.
