    Sapporo.

If you like winter sports Hokkaido has the best snow in the world so spending 3 months in the winter season, from December to March will be awesome.

Pros: Sapporo is cheaper to live than other big cities as it is quite small so easy to get around on foot or by bicycle. There are lots of mountains around the city so if you like hiking or camping in the summer time, it is quick and easy to get out of the city. The air is fresh and clean and the summer is dry and hot with no rainy season. (the main island and southern Japan have a rainy season) The food in Sapporo is amazing with some of the freshest seafood and vegetables in Japan. Beautiful people. Not as many foreigners as other major cities so you will use Japanese more. Riding your bike around the city. The beer festival in the summer - one month long of drinking in the sun.

Cons: Doesn't really feel like you are in Japan as Sapporo is a realtively new city. All the the buildings are very modern. The summer is short (about a month). May is usually wet and miserable. Not much of a club scene.

Chuo!I think its the best city in Japan.

Pros:I grew up close to here. Its really like a small, small town, with more population and stuff to do.I wouldn't recommend this for you though. It was not the best place to be around if you aren't Japanese.

Cons:Hard to find. And like I said, little to no foreigners who aren't teachers. There is actually a place called Miyabi in Chuo that has foreigners in it.Not much of the city life of urban tokyo, but still has city, not much forestry, lots of people, not very popular.

It depends, are you in high school or college? You can of course get scholarships for both.I myself got a scholarship to study in Busan because i'm left handed, but I guess the best way to get money if youre in HS is through AYUSA.Not many scholarships cover study abroad payment that are not a study abroad organization itself, but mostly college, but you can search it.Are you asian? You could probably get a scholarship for being a minority or something. But if you ARE in college, which would be the best in travel abroad, much easier.Just travel abroad through your college. Its not very hard at all,in fact, all the colleges in my state have study abroad in a different country.Like I said though if youre in high school, which is not likely since you want to study 3 years right?Itll be hard since demand to go to another country especially Japan is high.

If I could recommend a city for a foreigner, from all ive been in,thats NOT tokyo, itll always be Nara.Nara is urban like Chiba and Tokyo and also suburban with many statues and monuments and shrines like Kyoto. But its not always an obvious choice to go by foreigners.Or there is always Kobe, with a good college and city.Good luck though.

Kanazawa, only a few hours from Osaka and Kyoto, west coast city with a young population lots of foreign students study there because it is relatively cheap in comparison to other cities. Not too manic, close to lots of mountains, rivers and has some great coastal regions to travel and explore, lots of great outdoor activities on its doorstep (mountain biking, hiking , surfing, skiing, climbing, white water sports )Good train and bus services to all areas of Japan plus cheap flights internally and to South Korea. Downside , the city is addictive, make friends and you will have so much fun winter and summer and probably not want to leave.
