the flag was made up in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, no one really knows why, some say it has to do with "Over the Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz, each color stands for something:

    hot pink: sexuality

    red: life

    orange: healing

    yellow: sunlight

    green: nature

    turquoise: magic/art

    indigo/blue: serenity/harmony

    violet: spirit

after 1978 pink was dropped because Baker couldn't get enough pink fabric, and turquoise was dropped in 1979 leaving the flag as we see it today, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet

I've always assumed it had to do with tolerance -- rainbows have ALL the colors. No one of those colors is bad, or should be discarded.
