Am I too old to become an actress?

When I was younger I always had a talent for acting and dreamed of doing it professionally. My parents always said that I should focus on academic things and that acting was a pie in the sky dream. I did as they advised and went to university to study law then got a job in an office. The thing is, I feel creatively stifled.

I am in a play in October and I look forward to the rehearsal all week. Even if I'm tired or upset after another crushing day at work, as soon as I start reading the lines it's like I become someone else and feel like I want to be the best I can be.

I'm also working with a retired actress with years of experience who says I have great potential and am very talented. I'm happiest when I'm acting, singing, or modelling.

By the time I go to drama school, if I apply now and get in first time round, I will be 24. Is this too old to be an actress? Have I missed my chance to do this professionally?

I'm afraid of leaving behind my security, and I would have to move back to the UK which would be very difficult (I live in Spain) but I feel like if I don't take this risk I will always wonder, what if?

Any other information, like my chances of ever making a stable living wage etc. would be much appreciated.

Update:

Kavian- I don't have any real desire to be famous and would be just as happy in theatre as in film. I'm not some girl who just wants to be on the front cover of Heat, and I have no interest in reality TV or Twilight...most of the Twilight cast are terrible actors and I can't even watch the film it's so contrived. Nevertheless I appreciate your answer.

Update 2:

Just wanted to also note (should have pointed this out) I can easily pass for 16 and most people guess me at this age before they start talking to me.

Your age will not be a problem. There are plenty of roles for women in their 20s. Of course, there are also dozens, scores, hundreds of people auditioning for every good role. But you know how competitive professional acting is. You know how many talented performers are unemployed at any given time.

If you do decide to give up your current job and move back to the UK for drama school, be sure that you have some plan to support yourself while you're a student, and later when you're trying to get established in the profession.

    Yes.

Don't be a fool - you can use your creativity recreationally. You're right to be VERY afraid to leave your security behind. Do you realize the sheer volume of young women now who NEED to be an actress, esp after the sh!tstorm of Idols, Factors, and Twilights?

Lots of actresses have either been acting for years and only get notice or recognition when they're older, and plenty of actresses didn't go professional until they were much older than you :) and don't forget: age means experience :) don't worry about it, you'll be fine :) follow your dreams or let them waste away, just go for it ;)

Source(s): Unfortunately I don't know abou wage or stability of an acting career, even though I probably should :') but if you ease yourself into it and do it bit by bit alongside your office job that might make things easier :) and you would probably have to move back to the uk to go to a good drama school :P But take the risk!!! Who cares! The worst that can happen is that you learn a lesson :) good luck and god bless :) xx

Do acting as a hobby, but dont expect it to be your Job.

Many people go down that path and get stuck because they run out of money fast, unless your pro acting isn't a reliable way to earn money.

Can't you stay as you are, but get your name / photo on to agency lists wherever? 24 is not too old for anything, don't erect barriers up in front of yourself.
