How can i tell what is bogging down my computer?
Windows Vista Enterprise. Stuck with it.
For no apparent reason, the computer bogs down to the point where it takes 30 seconds for a window to come up or an action to complete (mouse click). If i reboot and open all the same apps it will work fine for hours and then back to being bogged down with no definable trigger.
If i start the task manager, my processor utilization never goes above 20% and i am using less than 1 gb of ram and i have 2gb installed. I think the task manager is not a true representation of what is going on. In windows XP you could bring up the task manager and see what was using all your processing power even though it was often an unidentifiable process like svchost. But at least you could see what the culprit was. Can anyone confirm that the VISTA task manager is "hiding" processes.
Now, is there any tool that i could install that would give me a true representation of what is going on, or can anyone explain why my computer is acting like it is being 100% utilized but only showing 20%?
Thanks
I understand that Vista stinks and that more RAM is good. However; I am not using all the RAM that is installed so the page file on the HDD is not even being accessed.
I guess my specific question is How accurate is the resource monitor? It doesn't seem accurate to me when RAM usage is at 40% and CPU usage never goes above 20%.
Then...if it is not accurate...is there a third party tool that is accurate?

Your major problem is running vista with only 2 gb of ram. What is happening is when you play a game of have several windows opens it pushes the memory and processor to the limit. If you are able I would install another 2 GB ram and you will find it runs much smoother. Vista has had this problem since it came out that was one of the major reasons for windows 7. I have vista on an old Dell D 620 with 4gb ram and it runs really fast.

Sorry to say being you say you're stuck with it. But Vista is the main problem. Try giving the computer a good clean out and run defrag. Also remove all programs from programs and features that you never use. If that don't help then I guess I would restore it back to it's factory settings.
If you do? Save all photos, videos, files, and important data to a DVD, CD, flash drive, or external hard drive.

to chkdsk
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk...
- before you chkdsk - google ready boost - can only use memory stick up to 4 giga bytes any more memory is just wasted - and apparently it has to be a certain type of memory flash I think
a while back my computer slowed down and sometimes would freeze
it started when it said windows update available and I clicked yes
- so I deleted and downloaded my browser again and I downloaded windows update ( I had to try this over and over and over and over again - during the course of two days )
- and I did chkdsk r
- when I finished all was fixed and my computer ran faster than before
=
- there are supposed to be """ programs """ stuff on line - that tells you what is running on your computer and some that say not only what is running on your computer ( and in the background ) but will identify everything for you and say which ones are possible Mailicious OR Unneccessary
but I could only find one possible one and it contained a virus
- I personally would not bother looking at a speedometer - if you know your car is going 5 miles per hour with the gas pedal to the floor why not just worry about FIXING it

this might be what you are looking for but IT IS NOT what I am looking for
http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au...
----------- this is NOT close to what I am looking for I heard there is a computer program where by when you are on line it will show everything that is going on - but that is no big deal - what is great about this program is that if it is a hacker or malicious software running or programs which are not needed this program will tell you - and allow you to stop them or get rid of them ------ at this time I think I was just told some Bravo Sierra because in all my internet searches I have not come close but the one that did had a virus on it - - - so I am starting to conclude that what I heard about just does not exist - - - but I think this ladies answer is what you are looking for

If your laptop is taking 35 mins to begin up after putting in the updates then there's some thing significantly unsuitable with it. Those updates are fundamental in maintaining your running secure and steady.
