denon avr-2308cl reciever?

i play a dvd and select dolby digital 5.1 but the reciever isn't changing on the display.it stays on pro-logic.how do i set the reciever to dvd/ipod and atomatically detect what format the dvd is playing on,dolby digital 5.1 surround,doby digital and dts

i have an optical cable hooked to the dvd player to the reciever,i just need to know how and what to set the reciever on

    You can't get digital sound with analog connections. Connect the dvd player to your receiver with a toslink or digital coaxial cable if hdmi isn't an option.

    No help from the receiver manual?

    You may check audio settings on DVD menu player.
