Good day,
1st the date and the location for the event. and budge.
Have old photos blown up of the birthday person, make mixed tapes of the music of our time i am 51.
Food can be pot luck( everyone brings a dish) or b-b-que hamburgers and hot-dogs and trimmings.
Keep it simple, most people my age are not into games...but washers or horseshoes tournaments with dollar store prizes are fun. But forget about "over the hill" theme, the 50's are the new 40's..enjoy...

I would just have a big dinner catered, with alcohol, and have guests contribute to a favorite charity of yours( instead of gifts).
