Can I replace my E-string with a D-string?

Just broke the E on my 4-string bass while tuning it. The only spares I have right now are G and D, D being the closest to.

It certainly won't work properly if you do. If you have to ask that question and you actually managed to break an E string on a bass whilst tuning it I recommend you get a book on the basics and a chromatic tuner. They will save you a lot of time and money.

No. Do not. The string will vibrate too much on a bass.

    It will sound like crap.
