Can a Lawyer advise me where to turn next?
Ok so I have been diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer stage 3/4 . I have been thinking alot as you might imagine about when this started and how. I am a smoker so keeping that in mind , I was working for a large steel mill when the symptoms started but it was never found. Now i have not worked for the mill in a few years but the fact is I left my job because I was constantly in bad health while working there. If it would have been found then I would have had insurance at the least , I am wondering if I can and should try to take this on and what kind of lawyer would handle it and would statute of limitations apply to a disease such as this that may not show up for years after exposure. I was exposed to various chemicals, alloys, smoke from the melting and refining stages as well as sub standard equipment namely the baghouse that is used to keep the air clean while the shop is running. I can produce medical records proving the troubles I was having at the time as well as proof that I was required to work in hazardous conditions such as the inside of a furnace to make repairs while the air quality was dangerous.
I am currently being treated for my cancer, I was just wondering if this was something They would just brush under the carpet because I am a smoker so it could be a factor , I just know that for about 2 years while still working at the mill my health was in decline and the doctors could never find the problem but never checked for cancer .
Dr. Snark, That is my issue at this point is that I realize there are other factors but I know when the symptoms started and that was the reason for the questions, I just know that it may have been combined factors but one can not be assumed over the other. I was healthy when I started working for them and 8 years later I have cancer . I can't prove it any more than they can prove against it.

Yes, a lawyer would be able to advise you. However, I wouldn't count on anything. Exposure to chemicals is a major risk factor and aluminum workers in particular are considered a high-risk group. I don't know if you would be exposed to similar conditions working with steel but this is something a motivated attorney would research.
Unfortunately for you, smoking is considered to be the greatest risk factor BY FAR. About 50% of bladder cancers are thought to be due to smoking, in fact. You would have a very difficult time proving that your cancer is due to your work environment and not due to your poor life decisions.

Well, unfortunately for you if you want to sue somebody for damages, it's up to you to prove it.
You worked there for 8 years before you got cancer? How long have you been smoking? Probably a lot longer than 8 years. Cancer is something that can take many years, maybe almost a lifetime, to develop.

Yes. A lawyer can advise you where to turn next.
If you do not have an attorney, use the local lawyer referral or the one at your state's bar association website (e.g., www.floridabar.org, www.texasbar.com).
The initial consultation should be very inexpensive.
If you have a winnable case against a defendant with assets available to satisfy a judgment, the lawyer should offer you a contingency contract. That means that you would not pay your lawyer. Your lawyer would only get paid after winning the case and collecting from the defendant.

Don't forget they are there to make money, they don't really care about you. Another words the make sure the doctor he chooses is going to actually do something to help you. If one attorney turns the case down, don't give up, keep trying.
