acting careers at 16?

i'm 16 years old and of course like any teen i want to become an actress. BUT the difference is i am willing to do what it takes because acting is my DREAM. i live in Columbus Ohio and i'm not really sure where to get started in the acting business. of course my parents arn't on board to move anywhere because there is no gaurentee on me following though with this according to them. they dont understand how bad i want this. no, its not for the fame, its all because i love to act. i am not really sure where to start and how i will convince my parents this is what i really want! so i need your help and advice on what i should do. i have been in church plays and this huge walkthrough Christmas play everyone comes to see in our area. i always get a major or the main roll in it. so yeah i don't really sing or anything im not big on that but i really would love to act! also please don't suggest something too expensive, i know we need to start small or no moving of course:)

thanks for the advice!!!

The drama club at your school is a good start, also community theaters. I've been acting in theatrical performances since I was 7, I'm now 21. I would also look into vocal lessons. You say you're not really into that, but directors look for well rounded performers. Also, when you start looking into colleges, theater programs are going to want well rounded performers as well!

Good luck and let nothing stand in the way of your dreams!

Acting being your 'dream' doesn't make any difference at all - everyone says that.

And as for your parents not understanding, I'm sure that they do - and again, it doesn't matter at all how badly you want it.

It's not that there's no guarantee (note the spelling) of you 'following through' - it's that it's extremely rare for any actor to ever make a living from acting alone. A tiny minority get to do that. Almost all actors also work one or more ordinary jobs as well - although they keep that very quiet!

Typically, a professional actor gets no more than 2 or 3 weeks' paid acting work a year - it's that tough!

There would be no point at all in your parents moving anywhere - at 16 it's going to take several years before you'd be able to start looking for an agent, and therefore auditions.

It's great that you're not one of those idiotic "I wanna be famous" kids - but you're going to have to make a huge effort to get even tiny roles (not rolls) in small-budget stuff - possibly for the rest of your life.

To start with, you'll need a couple of years at the least of weekly acting classes at a good acting school. Singing and dance lessons would also be very useful. You should also get experience in local theatre, drama groups - anything you can find.

Then you'd need to work towards getting a place at a good drama school or university.

Only when you've graduated would you need to start thinking about moving to where the action is.

And like I said - make sure you also have enough good qualifications to get a good ordinary job as well - you'll need it. Anything you can work free-lance is okay, so you can take time off for auditions.

Just understand that even after all that training, loads of experience and seriously hard work, there's no guarantee that you'll ever get a good role in anything. If you're okay with that, go for it.

    Good luck!

Not every teen wants to become an actress and your 16 you could change your mind about what you want to do so I would go to college when your 18 do some acting class then move to LA!

if you haven't already, join the drama club in your school. then pursue a degree in theater. that way you'd be acquainted with the business and the people in it
