Why should I tip waiters/waitresses?
I'm aware that in some states waiters make significantly less than others. Therefore, they are highly dependent on tips. However, I live in California, where the minimum wage is $8.00. This INCLUDES tipped workers (I researched it). I work as a customer service associate at a department store, and I have to fixate a permanent smile on my face and provide exceptional customer service for hours on end. I have to deal with the good, the bad, and the ugly, just like any waiter. It makes me furious to think that I am expected to provide waiters with a tip, when they are already being paid the same amount as me. Their job is no harder than mine, and no one has ever bothered to tip me! This whole tipping system is greatly flawed...
I'm already paying their salary by paying for the meal.

I am a waitress...and a cashier, and a busser. Anyone in the service industry LIVES off their tips. Only some waiting jobs may make minimum wage, most make below that..But even if they do make minimum wage, most get more taxes taken out because they are in the service industry and they do receive tips..so regardless of if you tip or not, they get money taken out for those tips that they supposedly receive.
It's common courtesy to tip, and if you feel it's unfair that you don't receive tips..get a food industry job and you will understand all the **** we do to earn those few measly dollars.

If you don't like it, stick to home, fast food or counter service. Most jobs are taken by choice in America.
I do think the percentage system is absurd - Denny's waiters are underpaid and steakhouse servers are grossly overpaid by this system, but until it changes, it's the system we've got.
I can't speak for all states, or your job, but the restaurants I worked in did NOT pay minimum wage, no benefits, no vacation or sick pay.

Because that is just the way it is, you agree to do so when you choose to dine out. That is all involved. If you have any class whatsoever, you leave a decent tip. If you dont then DONT DINE OUT eat in, seriously thats just really rude, they deserve their tips, they live off them. Maybe you should try being a waitress, and find yourself in that same situation so you can see how it is. Think outside the box, there are things in life we do if we want to live in normal society.

are you sure that's how it works?
I worked at a restaurant for two years, I made 4 dollars an hour plus tips.
if combining those two amounts on average per hour didn't equal out to be what i would make on minimum wage, they added onto my 4 an hour to make my paycheck larger so i would be at minimum wage for those hours.

Most waitresses do not make minimum wage (they make less) and you should tip them because it's a good seed to sow, and if it were you, you would want to be tipped.

i unuderstand your dislike for the tipping situation, however they deal with not only with crappy customrs but with food. just saying if you dont like that you are not being tipped then be a waiter.

but know you are not supposed to look into what they make out from their duty post, cos you may be somewhere ahead one day and you wont like some other to poke-nose,,,
