Beginner Fingerstyle Guitar?
I know nothing about playing guitar I have had one for many years but never took the time to learn. My question is I want to learn to play like Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler. My guitar has 1 11/16 nut width. Should I even try to learn fingerstyle on it? Or should I get a more classical with 1 3/4 nut width and not waste my time.

FIRST OF ALL, VERY IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOUR GUITARS IN TUNE!! plenty of online guitar tuners.
And assuming your a RIGHT HAND player...
With your RIGHT thumb, play the bottom (thickest, lowest sounding) E string. Just a 1, 2, 3, 4 slow rhythm, like a drum beat, 1, 2, 3, 4.... once u got that going, with your second finger, do the same with the top (highest, thinnest) E string, ping it from the bottom of the string. So, u got 2 strings playing, 1, 2, 3, 4.
Now, with your left hand, first finger, put it on the top E string, in the middle of the 2nd fret and take it off as you please, but always keep that bottom E string going 1, 2, 3, 4.. Experiment and move your finger up and down the fret board, keeping the bottom E going.
Keep doing that and maybe try using different fingers aswell on the fret board, but keep that bottom E going.
Only stay on those 2 strings for now, practise for a day doing that, then tommorow, start playing (with your RIGHT thumb) the bottom E and the next string up which is A, but keep the rhythm 1,2,3,4, and alternate between the bottom E and A, and stay on the top E with your LEFT fingers.
Keep going and keep practising, and naturally you will become more adventurous and experimenting.
The guitar is a musical instrument, and it only plays music, so learning the basics of music is an absolute MUST!.... only certain notes can be played in different keys, so the technique ive given you here is in the key of E... look online at what notes can be played in the key of E, and find out where the notes are on the guitar, and only play those notes.
