why is ther an illustrator and a photoshop?

i know photo shop is for manipulating photos and illustrator is for drawings, but you can create drawings in PS as well, and it's easier for me to do it in PS. PS seems user freindly for someone who never had a lesson, Illustrator , you need a rocket science degree. Only big difference i see is Illustrator has live paint anfd live trace, wish they would import those 2 features into PS and I would be good.

Because they are for two different things.

Photoshop is a raster image editor (images are made of pixels)

Illustrator is a vector image editor (images are made of vectors - lines, fills and strokes).

Photoshop will never get the vector tools illustrator has - because there is no point - it's not a vector image editor. It's use will always be limited to raster graphics, although it can be used for simple vector-style graphics, it could never replace a true vector image editor like illustrator because the limitation of using pixels is no good when it comes to designing logos or any graphics that need to be resized.

Illustrator is not rocket science - although it's interface is cumbersome, and awkward. To be honest I prefer Inkscape.

As mentioned above, illustrator is designed for vector graphics.

And yes, while Photoshop can do some minor vector work - its not quite up to the drawing standard.

PS is not user friendly. When i made the transition from Paint Shop Pro to it, i was pulling out my hair. And i still do - i am blown away by how **** Photoshop really is for users. Yes it does lots of things - but it does it with so so so many more mouse clicks than it needs.

    ANYWAY!

    Very different programs.

Illustrator is intended for vector graphics and Photoshop is intended for raster graphics. In layman's terms: enlarge a vector file, it retains sharpness and details; enlarge a raster file (past its resolution), you get a pixelated picture. Try zooming in about 2000% in PS and you can see each pixel.

Why? Because instead of working with pixels like Photoshop does, AI works with points, lines, curves and so on. An AI file contains instructions on how to recreate a graphic with such points, lines and curves; whereas a PS file contains pixels (which basically means the graphic itself).
