Why do we need 2 scales to measure earthquakes?

    The Richter scale is an objective quantifiable measure of the magnitude (amount of energy released) of an earthquake. Measured using devices called seismographs

    The Modified Mercalli Scale is a subjective measure of the intesity (destructive force) of an earthquake. Mercalli Scale ratings are typically assigned by an assessment of physical damage and eyewitness accounts of the quake.
