Is that what's marked on the neck of the hitch? Then you need that size ball..
I have a hitch marked 2" and I had someone tell me I needed a 1 and 5/8" ball. Hitch bounced around on the ball, sounded very unstable. I prefer the ride/ attachment with tthe 2" ball.

Unless this is a very big horse trailer and it is a bumper pull it has a 2" hitch unless it has been changed, my 16' stock trailer has a 2" hitch.

Trailer hitch ball size depends on the load being pulled. Most common sizes are 1 7/8" and 2".
