How can I trace land ownership in USA?

My grandad said he bought an acre of land in the US in the 50s/60s. He is now deceased and we can find no papers relating to this. This there any way I can investigate this?

USA has over 3,000 counties and probably hundreds of separate land registries. Feel free to contact each.

Without knowing the specific location of that land, you have little chance of finding it. As you said there is no paperwork. It's possible your grandfather was simply telling a tall tale.

    Good luck.

Yeah, it's possible. Here's what I would do:

    1. Research his most recent financial transactions. If he owned land, he had to pay property taxes to some county government.

If that doesn't work, then contact a "skip-tracer" (i.e., lawyer or collection agent that specializes in finding assets of debtors). They have ways of researching all of the assets of an individual in the USA.
