Is it normal to also sign the lease when renting just a room?
I'm always cautious, so... would it be normal to ask a tenant, about to rent a room out to me, if I'm able to sign the lease as well?
I don't want to pay a potential tenant the first month's rent + security deposit and then get swindled out of it, with no protection legally, because they won't let me in. On that note, would it be rude to ask for a house key?
I see; does that mean it's common for prospects to not sign leases and still be protected, in some way, under the law?

A lease or rental contract would spell out the responsibilities of each party, the amount of funds that would change hands and would be returned upon the completion of the lease or rental agreement. It would also indicate the proper method of ending the contract.
Most landlords would provide a front door key. There should be no reason for not doing so.
There are some that rent rooms in their homes that might not follow these protocols. They might be unaware of the necessity or need for such documents. They might even think they would be unable to rent rooms in their homes from friends, family and neighbors even though such information is false.
If this is the case you would have to take these landlords at face value or a gut feeling you might have.
I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

Rude to ask for a house key? If they didn't offer one, I would run away very fast.
Yes, ask for a lease, if even just month to month.
