MagicTG ruling question?
Please settle a debate. My friend has Mirran Crusader on the field. I play Black Sun's Zenith and distribute enough -1/-1 counters do kill the crusader. My friend claims that because his crusader is 'pro-black,' that the Black Sun doesn't effect it. I counter that "protection" prevents damage, blocking and targeting by black sources and -1/-1 counters are not considered damage and he would still die.

You are correct. Protection does four things - prevents damage, makes any Auras/Equipment/Fortifications fall off, prevents blocking, and prevents targeting. Black Sun's Zenith does none of these things, so it bypasses protection (and hexproof, shroud and what have you).

You are. If Black Sun's Zenith was "X -1/-1 on target creature" then protection would apply.
But it says "each creature" and that's no more targeting than "Wrath of God" is when it destroys all creatures.

Protection only prevents that creature from being targeted by a spell or ability. BSZ doesn't target so the protection won't do anything.
