Is Obamacare really the first mandatory insurance?

Isn't Social Security a mandatory fee/tax/insurance on all working people?

Isn't unemployment insurance a mandatory insurance unless you are an independent contractor?

Isn't car insurance a mandatory insurance for any driving person?

Update:

Can't you opt out of Obamacare the same way you opt out of SS or Medicare? By not working?

Yes, Obamacare is the first FEDERALLY MANDATED insurance - it's the first time the federal government has said, every man, woman and child MUST purchase private health insurance, or pay a fine if they don't.

Social security isn't mandatory - you can "opt out" by not working. And, it's not insurance - it's essentially the same as welfare - an entitlement program funded partially by current working taxpayers, and heavily by everyone else.

Unemployment is mandatory FOR EMPLOYERS. It doesn't apply (in most states) to the self employed, or the unemployed. Also, it's run on a STATE basis, not a federal basis, and is more of a welfare program than true insurance.

How do you know the difference between "welfare" and "insurance"? Insurance is when YOU have a policy that YOU buy, with YOUR name on it. Welfare, is when government takes tax money, and gives it out. Social security, unemployment, medicare, medicaid - none of those is INSURANCE. There's no CONTRACT. You're not a policyholder. And you're not forced to BUY it.

Car insurance is mandated on a state by state basis - and NH does NOT require it. You can opt out, by not owning or driving a car.

Obamacare, is effectively a tax on being ALIVE, if you don't purchase a private sector product - which the Obama administration is estimating will cost the average family, almost $2,000 a MONTH.

On the federal level yes it is the first mandatory insurance. It is based off of MA's mandatory insurance law introduced by Mitt Romney when he was governor. It gives options, pay a private health insurance provider, pay into the public health option pool,or pay a tax penalty.

For MA the law really does no good in my opinion because once someone becomes unemployed they can't afford private or the public option and since their eligibility for free mass health care is based on their previous years earnings they are stuck paying the penalty which means their state tax or a portion of it, if they receive a tax refund is withheld and the penalty amount goes up for every year you don't have insurance.

Participation in the Obamacare is not the same as paying a payroll tax. You buy insurance and get a tax credit when you file your return. Auto insurance is regulated by each state. This is federal mandate and some people object for that reason. However, it was an economic decision since the federal govt pays partly for uninsured people when they dont pay the hospital or doctor bills.

You cannot opt out of the individual mandate because the insurance exchanges would not be able to offer lower rates if there were not enough people participating, then it would be voluntary as it is now. The purpose of the mandate is to lower insurance rates and allow people to buy insurance even if they are lower income and sick. The insurance companies made reforms in return for getting new customers. The whole thing is a business deal.

Social Security taxes are required because they pay for current beneficiaries as well as for you if you become disabled, divorced or die. The government of any advanced nation has an obligation to help its citizens.

Unemployment insurance is paid by the employer.

    Car insurance is irrelevant.

Health care is very costly, that's why it is more significant than the rest you mention. If people are sick they dont work and pay taxes and the company loses productivity and the person loses wages and the government has to chip in to cover some unpaid medical.

With SS and Car insurance, you are paying to insure yourself. [ - and you can be self insured if you put up a (say) $100,000 bond for your car insurance.] {There are also many people driving without car insurance <- although that is wrong.} You can also be self-insured with health care by paying for your medical needs as they come along. Currently there is no law saying you HAVE TO have health insurance through a health insurance company.

With Obamacare, you are being mandated (forced) to pay for your yourself* and your neighbor to a for-profit company that can pay its executives whatever they want; and still not necessarily pay for all of the medical treatment you need.

    * even if you are healthy, and it is cheaper to pay-as-you-go; which should be your choice (under the idea of American freedom and choice).

... and do not think that just because we agree as a country that some government programs are good (like Social Security and Medicare) that we want socialism in all areas of government (and our lives!!)

No, but, then again, Obamcare is not really mandatory insurance. It gives you the option to pay an extra tax instead of getting insurance. With car insurance, you don't get that option.

Obamacare might be the first optional insurance to be so widely (and incorrectly) thought to be mandatory.

Maybe it is one of those things that men and women cry foul on until it happens to them then as soon as they're confronted with the true finical end result will scream why it used to be no longer the opposite direction. Speakme as any person who was hit and practically killed with the aid of an uninsured driver and a Aunt of an extraordinarily unwell little boy who was once denied heath care do to a preexisting condition. My coverage did step in and cover me… however was that correct? Used to be is right that my enterprise had to pay for the damages caused with the aid of any one one who refused to comply with the law? They had no belongings so I might now not even file suet for misplaced wages or ache and suffering for the 6 months I was once out of work. They went after him then he filed for bankruptcy so I obtained nothing. As for wellness-care, if you are a real fiscal conservative you could possibly be aware of that we the tax payer pay both with Taxes or bigger insurance costs for those who do not need insurance policy. When my nephew used to be denied insurance policy, despite the fact that his sickness was curable and his mom had a just right job and coverage he was once pressured on a version of Medicare and we the tax payers paid for his lifestyles-flights and his weeks at a time clinic stays. Now it’s a bit of distinctive then no longer having it within the first location, but the out come continues to be the same. They both skip out of the bill bigger rates for all or they go on a government plan. When you realize what number of millions of dollars we spend each and every 12 months as tax payers masking individuals who can however opt for not to be protected you can be seeing this in yet another gentle.

    - You don't have to buy it.

    - You can simply pay the tax.

    - Why you'd do that would be unknown.

    - Social Security isn't insurance, it's a pension. But, technically you pay into Medicare when you pay FICA.

    - And, BTW if you're independent contract you pay TWICE as much because you pay what the employee AND the employer pays.
