Read this in a book today and wonder how you feel about it. It is by a pastor of fifteen years?
If a speaker takes a literal interpretation of creation, some people
will rest assured that he or she can be trusted to speak the truth about
the rest of the bible,
Other people, who are unable to dismiss years of scientific research
supporting evolutionary theory, may consider the same speaker ignorant.
Yet neither side is willing to challenge it's fundamental reading of the text.
For both sides, the story is no longer alive.
The bible has become a club used to bludgeon one's enemies. All joy
and laughter are lost in the hand to hand combat of biblical interpretation.

I consider it a laughable myth to be tossed aside as ignorant ancient superstition.
If I need a club to bludgeon somebody, I'll use an actual club -- though I'd almost certainly never do any such thing.
I find it more than a little amusing that after 1800+ years of "literal interpretation," to the point of imprisoning, torturing, and executing anyone who dared disagree with a literal interpretation, some christians think it's just fine to pretend none of that ever happened, and maintain their irrational belief by simply claiming, "Oh, that's just a metaphor."
Amusing...and more than a little dishonest.
Peace.

I think that pastor makes a good point that when a person takes the literal approach to the Bible, others who wish to accept the whole Bible as truth feel comforted.
Many churches are like that; the Bible is seen by them as the word of God, and to doubt some part of it, especially a famous story "In the Beginning," is seen as a betrayal of faith.
So really, is the whole creationist/evolutionist fight here on R&S more a fight between those who totally accept the Bible, and those who wish to pick it apart and say "this is wrong" and "that is wrong"?
Maybe we will all mature enough to allow the Bible literalists to have their faith as we have ours.
All people have to believe something that resonates in their heart, it has to sound true to them, and endlessly attacking them for this individual truth is wrong.

the bible is a story, most of which was stolen from other texts and tales before it was written.
