Merge paths in Adobe Illustrator CS5?

I'm using Adobe Illustrator CS5 and I have several shapes in the same layer, but when I use the "Drop Shadow" effect, one shape drops a shadow on the other. I've tried going Effect>Pathfinder>Merge, Add, Intersect, but I still get the shadow drop overlap. How do I avoid this? I want it to appear as one shape, all dropping one shadow on the background. Thanks.

Select the two shapes, go to Window>Pathfinder and in the bottom Pathfinders row click on Merge.
