Anybody here familiar with the equestrian sport of tentpegging?

It's very popular in the East, as in eastern hemisphere, not New Yawk Sitteee. The rider gallops up to a small 'target' in the ground and spears it with a lance, then flips it out of the ground. It began as a martial art, to pull up the enemy's tent pegs so their tents collapse in on them and the attacking army can slaughter them as they try to wake up and fumble their way out of the collapsed tent. I've seen a few demonstrations of it, but never an actual competition.

Anybody interested in learning how to do it?

Its an Asian Calvary "game" (they call it) of ancient origins. Its recognized by the International Equestrian Federation as well in 1982. The game has spread to other countries as well. Canada (yea), India and Oman are leading right now in the competitions. The rules are very strict and the exercise needing to be precise with good marksmanship. How big the target is, how many targets are on a course, a minimum time allowed, the weight of the lance or other weapon used, and they even judge how well the object picked up was struck and how far it was carried. They believe that this game originated in India in the Middle Ages, where they used to spear the enemies elephants just above the toe in hopes they would rear up, unseat the rider and start trampling things in their path. Chaotic advantage, I guess. They compete with either a sword or a lance in this one.

There are other games played as well. ring jousting, lemon sticking (hanging from a cord) Quintain sticking, (piercing a mannequin on a rocking pedestal and Partheon, which is mounted archery. Tent pegging is the most popular one.

Equestrian will continue to be an Olympic sport in 2016 and 2020 Olympics. I, for one, don't like this sport as well because this is the only Olympic sport where athlete will depend on the performance of his/her horse in order for him/her to win a medal. But sadly,it would be very difficult that this sport will be removed from the Olympic Games because rich people compete in this sport. And we all know, money goes around in IOC.

For information about the equestrian sport of tentpegging please take a look at the website of UK based Sussex Peggers Riding Club - www.sussexpeggers.com. This is a British Horse Society Riding Club that was set up in 2009 for the purpose of developing and promoting the equestrian sport of mounted skill at arms - one discipline of which is tentpegging - both in the UK and overseas.

we always had that at gymkhanas. Usually it was a teams competing against one another. Four or five riders in a line behind one another or next to one another. All of them have to peg the little board at the same time in a line at different speeds. The point of the pole is quite sharp (obviously) so i dont think i want to do it. Im sure ill peg the leg of the horse next to me.

Yes, I have seen it loads of times.

Here in Australia they do displays of it all the time, especially at all the royal shows etc.

    Great to watch.

Especially when all four riders hold up their pegs successfully as they gallop past.

I've heard of it and seen pictures, but have never seen it in person or heard of anyone doing it around here. I'd give it a try but I'd be afraid the peg would stick, and I'd hurt my wrist or get pulled off my horse!

I think it'd be something really cool to learn to do! Do you have any videos of it being done? I would like to see!
