One of my Mals has the beginnings of Cataracts... how much is a surgery?
My 6 yo Malamute purebred has some cataracts starting in his eye. Vet said not to worry they will be slow to grow but eventually he will either need surgery or use one eye to see.
I'd like to start saving for the surgery, but not sure on what the cost is of this type of specialty surgery... anyone ever go to a canine opthamologist for doggy cataracts surgery?
Thanks!
Ya I asked my vet... she basically said she didn't know because eye surgeries are performed by specialists not regular vets. (and they dont do it in my vet's office).

Animal Eye Care is a group on the east coast and they charged $1500-2000 for the last 3 dogs we referred in the last 12 months for lens replacement in a single eye. Like your vet said though, his cataract may take many years to get bigger. You have time. You could get pet insurance now, and save a big chunk of money on that surgery, as well as future trauma, injury, and surgery. Look into VPI and AKC pet insurance. Many pet owners find it saves them much money after they are reimbursed.

Get a referral from your vet and call for an estimate. The cost will vary by location, your dog's weight, any other risk factors, your location and from vet to vet
