The House and Senate do start each session with a prayer. Both chambers appoint a Chaplain (selected from various denominations) to lead the prayer, and occasionally guest chaplains are invited in as well. When the Senate convenes as a Court of Impeachment (for Federal judges or Presidents) it's the same as any other session, and a prayer is offered at the start.
