Traveling to NYC in July. Multiple questions!?
Hello All,
I Will be traveling to NYC in July for work. I have been there numerous times but only for day trips when visiting family in Long Island. I will be going on the week of July 18-22. I will be staying at a hotel on Avenue of the Americas and W 30th St. I Know the Empire State Building is near by so I plan on visiting that for my 3rd time. Mainly what I am curious about is
- Is Newark or Laguardia better to fly into for travel to Manhattan.
- I will be traveling to the Intrepid Museum daily. What type of travel is recommended? Taxi, Train or Walking?
-Any good Festivals or events going on around that time? If that's to detailed a site listing the cities events would be nice as well.
- Best Places to visit beside Times Square and Empire State Building?
- Any good restaurants near my hotels address? Good Local Spots?
Also I do Videography for a living and want to film some standard Stock Footage of the skyline, and other things like the bridges and main buildings. I was curious if other then the observatory on the Empire State Building is there other places to get good views and shots. (Other then the helicopter ride lol)
Sorry for all the questions, I would just really like to take advantage of the time that I am there.
Thanks

-Newark or LaGuardia. It really doesn't matter. Newark is easier to get into Manhattan by public transportation, but LaGuardia is physically closer. Usually the answer is whichever gets you the cheapest flight
-The Intrepid is on the West Side in the mid 40's. You will be in middle in the 30's. While the walk isn't unbearable, it will suck if it's raining. The subway isn't the best solution because, you wouldn't really cut down much on the walk. Crosstown buses are notoriously slow. If you can't walk, take a cab.
-Follow the link for street fairs.

-NYC practically has everything. It all depends on your interests. Go see a ball game, go to one of the many museums, check out Coney Island. Since you are into video you should go to the Museum of the Moving Image and The Paley Center for Media.

My friend, in regards to your airport question. Although, LGA is cheaper, Newark Airport have better rail connection to and from the city. Therefore, I would recommend landing at Newark.
In regards to the Intrepid Museum, which is the new home of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the best way to get there from you hotel on West 30th and 6th Avenue will be by bus.
The Times Square and Port Authority Bus Terminal subway station are the two closest station to the museum. However, you will still need to either walk or take the M42 bus from the subway to the museum which is located on West 45th Street and 12th Avenue.
In regards to street fairs and festivals, the link below will be have a full list of them in the city.
In regards to other places to visit. Well, that is a long list, therefore, may I recommend the blog post at the link below, which has a small list of the top attractions in the New York City.
For the full list of attractions, click on the link at the bottom of the blog post.
In regards to your restaurant question, may I recommend the link below, which has all the information about individual restaurants in the city.
Finally, in regards to your Videography. Other the Empire State Building, the only building with an observation deck at current is the Top of The Rock Observatory at Rockefeller Center. You can also check out the Promenade in the Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn, which has a nice view of the Lower Manhattan Skyline.
In addition, you can head over the the Jersey City Waterfront at Exchange Place in Downtown JC, which like the Brooklyn Promenade, has a nice view of the Lower Manhattan Skyline.
I hope this information is very helpful.
Good luck

-Both airports are fine to fly into and get to Manhattan. Go with whichever you can get better airfare for. Remember that LaGuardia is a domestic airport, no international flights since there are no areas for Customs and Immigration, but Newark is an international airport, as is JFK, and also handles more longer distance domestic flights as well.
-Don't bother taking a taxi daily. Except going to/from the airport with luggage, don't bother taking a taxi at all. Your best bet is to walk to the Intrepid. If you think that's too far to walk the whole way, take the subway to Times Square and walk from there.
-There's almost always something going on. Just do a Google Search for "NYC events" and it's highly likely you'll find something of interest.
-So many other places. Way too many to list.
-Just look around on Google Maps in the neighborhood for different spots. A place I might like and call "good" you might disagree.
There is an observation deck at Rockefeller Center. Look online for Top of the Rock. It's not as tall as the Empire State Building, but the views are still amazing on a clear day.

LGA is your best airport
M-60 Bus out of LGA 1 stop to Astoria Blvd
Go upstairs and transfer to the N/ Q train to 28th and B'way
To get to the Intrepid
Take the Uptown N/Q to 49 th street
Transfer to the crosstown M-50 bus
A really great view of the Manhattan Skyline can be had if you take the # 7 Train to Flushing ...eat some Asian food
then take the Q-44 bus towards Jamaica and getting off at the Long Island Expressway stop
In fact many of the platforms on the # 7 train offer great views of Manhattan
I'm getting a little tired so I'm going to cut this short
At the foot of Broadway /Bowling Green is the Beaux Arts old US Customs House ...which is now a Smithsonian Museum ...so you'll have to pass thru security to get in
on both sides of the entrance are the most incredible floating spiral staircases that I've ever seen
Go to the bottom floor and look up to get the full effect

I'll try to answer as many as possible.
As far as airports go it's a toss up. If you choose Laguardia you'll have a long cab ride and about a $40 cab fare to get into Manhattan. If you choose Newark you have to take the train to Penn Station and then you are close enough to walk to your hotel.
Travel to and from the Intrepid from your hotel is only about two miles. An easy cab ride. You may want to try and walk it but it won't be a short walk on the city streets.
Restaurants. For the best steak you'll ever eat try Keen's Steakhouse on West 36th at 6th Ave.
For videography you can also go to the Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center. Or take one of those double decker bus tours and sit on the top where there is no roof. Plenty of unobstructed views of the city from that angle.

To get good shots of the skyline take the PATH train to Hoboken walk over to the river and then shoot.
There is a nice little Irish pub on the corner of 30 and 8th called the Molly Wee decent food great staff and you can watch soccer games. There is a free bus to the ferry terminal on 38 and the river not far from the Intrepid get on it somewhere on west bound 34 st bus stop and flag down the bus that has ferry on it's marquee (you're supposed to be taking the ferry but you might be able to get a ride once or twice) you could take the ferry and get some good skyline shots from the boat. and then take some more shots from the jersey side.
For breakfast the Bagel Maven on 30 and 7th is reasonable and good.
Enjoy

It is no longer so much the city busier on Friday than Monday but the going fee. Journey during a weekend (leave Friday, return Monday) is extra highly-priced than mid-week travel (leave Monday, return Thursday or Friday). Monday's are not any exclusive from Friday's. How you intend to see the quality points of interest in NYC is what concerns.
