Anyone know where to recycle polypropylene bags?

Purina has switched in the last few years to these woven nylon burlap-like bags. They've got a nice recycle logo on them with a 5 which would lead one to believe they are recycle able. but good luck finding anyone to take them. I have about a hundred of them from my horse feed and now realize Purina (the other one) is also making their dog food bags out of the stuff and the cat litter is coming in them.

I have emailed Purina and asked about recycling them - they sent me a neat little list of recyclers in my area. I've contacted all - none take their bags. I looked on Nutrena's website, they have an FAQ regarding it with a link to Earth 911 to find a recycler in my area, guess what? None in my area.

Anyone got any ideas about how to dispose of these things without a truckload of 'em going to a landfill?

Update:

Zeph - Sorry - I should have added I get the bags from TSC. I did already check with them about a recycling program and they told me to contact Purina which turned into a big circle jerk. I told Purina today how smart they'd be to push for a recycling program where they actively looked to recycle their own bags and marketed how to get them recycled - I bet they'd have great results and the positive PR from doing so may be tremendous. don't know if it's just Michigan that has no recyclers or what... Thanks for the info so far. Gallop - I'll check into that. Thanks!

Update 2:

Driver - I've learned from this that Plastic #1-#7 may acutally mean they accept plastic bottles #1-#7 - plastic bags are different.

I may have found a source to take them - the recycling center at MSU. I did get a link that says they take #5 plastic bags so I called to see if they did. the nice gal I talked to on the phone is checking and I hope to learn they can take them on Monday. Perhaps I'll be able to figure out how to get back here and maybe can update you all on what I learned.

Thanks to all of you!

If there is no participating Whole Foods Market program near you, then you can mail them in to this facility

I recently noticed a #4 on my shavings bags and have been meaning to check to see if I can recycle them. I just looked at my county's recycling page, and it says it accepts plastics with #1 - 7 (except for wide-mouth #6 for some reason), plus plastic film, wrap or bags. I had no idea I could put plastic wrap in the recycling, not to mention my Purina dog food bags! Thanks for getting me to look it up and good luck with your quest.

My feed store takes thes back for recycling.

Perhaps you could get a petition going, suggesting your feed store do the same. I'm pretty sure it's free/low cost for the feed store if enough people recycle.

Benefits to the feed store: more people will buy their feed there if they recycle. I know it's one reason I shop at my feed store - there's at least one a lot closer.

Where is the #5 logo? My county will take polypropylene bags only if they have the logo but I've been unable to find one.
