What do you mean by "controversial"? If you mean that your book has animal cruelty or violence in it, you could just try not going over on the detail of the cruelty. Say your characters' names are Max and Joe. Max has to find some money, but Jack wants to go out and kill his dog. In that situation, if you are, for whatever reason, convinced that Jack should kill the dog, you could just have him leave the room while Max goes out to look for the money. You could then concentrate on Max's story about finding the money rather than going into too much detail about the dog's death. In this way, you can still use positive detail without using too much negative detail.

If you mean that your book has lots of racism, sexism or other prejudice, you could just make it so that only the villains are prejudiced. This would mean that you would not offend people quite as much and you may even attract the support of anti-prejudice campaigners.

If you mean that your book contains erotic scenes, you could try talking about other characters while the sex is happening and have the characters that have sex come back into it later. This way the reader gets the idea without too much rude detail, which may offend some people.

If you want to deliberately make your book controversial, while not forgetting the storyline, include lots of prejudice, animal cruelty, violence and/or erotic scenes and do not hide these horrors. However, your book will probably be banned in at least one place if you do this. That is if it ever even gets published. Because I cannot see why someone why try to make their book just to offend others or to see what their reaction is, I would strongly advise against this.

Coming from someone who writes a lot of "controversial" stuff, my sole tip would have to be:

    -Be honest.

What I mean is, don't exaggerate the truth but don't water down the truth. If a horrible event happened at your junior school, don't leave out any graphic details or ugly truths. On the other hand, don't make it sound worse than it actually was.

if you just speak the truth, that's usually controversial in of itself. If you water it down, you won't have the next Catcher in the Rye. If you exaggerate it, you'll just be annoying.

I would say the best thing to do is focus on writing a good pot with well developed characters. If you focus on being controversial immediately. Novel probably won't be worth a darn anyway.

Possibly come up with a controversial storyline and work on really developing the plot and characters. If you have gone through controversial events in your life focus on how you can weave them together and develop them into a sophisticated plot. The rest of it will take care of itself.

I think that there's a south park episode out there that'll help you out.
