Should I get an in room air conditioner.?
I think 78 degrees is hot and my roommate doesn't. I want our thermostat set at 72 and he thinks anything under 74 is insane. We live in central Florida. My room seems hotter than any other room in the house and to make it comfortable at night (where I'm not sweating) I have to set the thermostat at 74. His idea was to get an indoor ac for my room and keep the thermostat for the central ac at 76. Will this save energy and money or use more because the indoor ac is drawing energy?

That's a more efficient use of electricity than two of you arguing over the central thermostat. Cooling one room doesn't take much extra effort, especially if the central AC is getting that room within spitting distance of the ultimate goal.
It's called "zone cooling," and large central systems will do it to make a smaller unit serve a larger facility by turning its capacity to the portion of the building that needs it, when it needs it. You don't use a dining room or kitchen in the middle of the night, for instance, and thus a sophisticated zoning system would shut down those areas while keeping the bedrooms exactly where they ought to be. During daylight hours, the bedrooms would turn off.
So yes, get the small window unit. You'll be able to be as cool as you want, and your mate won't be frozen.

Yes and No. You will draw more energy BUY you will not be running the central.
I know FLA can be humid. Even at 70 degrees it can be uncomfortable. So a window mounted unit (small) should do just fine for the extra cooling you want. Yeah, you will be asked to shell out more money for your share of the electrical bill but that's only reasonable. Never mind the energy you save by not running the central.
It's about compromise, and yes, I agree that 74 is the limit for cool setting, but it's a matter of how much money you choose to spend on your power consumption. IF you wanted the house at 68 you could do that. Just expect the energy bill to jump way up.
In short, you are going to spend more money for electricity any time you keep a house cooler. You'll also have the extra expense of buying a window unit, but that's a one time expense. But more so than keeping the room cooler it's the humidity you need to battle. A window unit will manage that just fine.
Good luck.

No. those window instruments upload quick on your electric powered bill. particularly if u have a useful length residing house or maybe position of residing. perhaps merely get a small 100 and ten BTU to save your bedroom cool until eventually u get the different fixed. After u tried it you may want to be pleased about needed air.
