Who invents new medicines?

Who works on new medicines? Like people of what profession? It's for a story I'm writing. I'm kind of doubting myself right now, lol. I was thinking a scientist, but what kind of scientist specifically?

Technically, anyone can be in a position that develops new pharmaceutics in a company but traditionally people are required to have a PhD in some sort of science field. Most of the professors at my university that are developing new pharmaceutics have PhD's in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Others are bioengineering degrees and others have Pharm.D degrees.
