What to do about abandoned dogs?
Where I live, people seem to dump their dogs there, they just come along in their cars, put the dogs out and drive off. We live in the country in Ireland and my family and I just can't watch them suffer so we usually end up taking them in and looking after them even though we already have five dogs of our own. All of our own dogs have their own individual dog pens outside so none of our animals live in the house because that would be really smelly!! We have ended up buying five spare dog pens for the strays and usually one or two dogs are abandoned per month. We have to buy loads of food for them and then we rehome them. We're getting sick of people dumping their animals and we tried to get one man's license plate but he had it covered! How can we deal with this or should we just keep looking after the animals, and because I have a 5 year old sister, she could get hurt if one of the dogs were aggressive and attacked her.
So far this year this is what we've taken in:
-male labrador cross
-female labrador
-two female hounds, abandoned together
-female terrier cross
-male jack russel
All of these animals, we have found homes for but we still have
-four terrier puppies, abandoned in a box together
-female spaniel cross
-male greyhound
How can we stop people abandoning more dogs or do about the dogs? We won't give them to shelters a there are already enough dogs in the shelters. Thanks
Jen: I know the type of shows you're talking about but sadly there's nothing like that where I live, not even shelters, the closest shelter is a 4 hour drive away :( My dad was saying that he thinks the greyhound was an ex-racer because they are usually shot or abandoned when they start to lose :( Thanks for taking time to read and reply to my question though :)

wow thats really nice of you to do that!
call the police and tell them whats happening and maybe they would be willing to monitor the area from a distance every once in a while.
put up a sign where the dogs usually get dumped that says something about they are being watched or a fine will be charged.
keep on trying to get thier license, thats a good idea
put up a no trespassong sign

I don't know if you have rescue groups in the city near you but I will tell you how it works here where I live and maybe you can find one that does the some there. Let the rescue group know what you are dealing with and then let them know you want to rehome the excess dogs. The rescue group will want some help from you and this is the kind of help they will want.
1. you home them till a new owner can be found.
2. you take the animals for the adoptions events and show the animals off and then take them home again if no one wanted that animal this time.
3. Some rescue groups might provide a crate for each animal while the animal is at the event but some will want you to provide your own, ask them.
Most rescue organizations will have events on the weekends that last a few hours a day. This nice thing about rescue groups is that they make sure each dog goes to a very good home. Maybe your mom and dad can drop you and a couple of dogs off while they are shopping and then pick you all back up when they are finished.
As far as what to do about the people who do this? The only advice is have is to try to film it. I have a daughter that had vandals and she put up a video home security system. For her it is cheaper than the damage that has been done. The police can do more if they know who is doing it but the problem you have is that the police may not even see this as a crime. It might be a minor thing for them even though it is major for you.
