About the only 'easy' way is to use VBA. However, your image names would have to be identical to the item names, and in the same path.

Not sure if this works for all versions of Excel but it works in 2003. First enter your email into any cell and press enter. Now hover your cursor over the front of the address and you'll eventually see a little box appear below the address. When you mouse over it a small window with the tool tip "AutoCorrect Options" will appear. Press the downward pointing arrow and choose "Stop Automatically Creating Hyperlinks". You can also get to the AutoCorrect Options by going to the Tools menu.
