why is a "fringe" (UK) called "bangs" in the US?
Fringe, seems a logical word - you get fringes on lampshades and jackets etc - but where do "bangs" come into it?
Thanks!

It comes from the term 'bang-off' which means to end abruptly. It was originally used for those dead-straight fringes but now tends to be used for any sort of fringe.

I haven't heard the term "bangs" for hair since I was in first grade decades ago. I don't have a clue if their using the same vocabulary. I'd ask my gf, but she would say, jealously, "why are you so obsessed with girl things!" (Which is why I'll never marry the cute, hot, little monster. )
