How long do you think it will be before our mail is censored?

The U.K. government wants to allow all emails, phone calls and texts to be monitored 'to prevent crime'. Once that begins some people will go back to old fashioned mail. It will be slower and more expensive but those with something to hide will decide it's worth it to do that so do you think that the mail will also be censored, as used to be the case in Communist countries, so that the few crooks can be caught.

Can you imagine a day when our mail arrives having been, obviously, opened and resealed? All types of courier services will probably be treated the same way. Is all this a step in the direction of the loss of all our freedom? How long do you think it will take before there will be secret police in every coffee shop and every supermarket aisle and planted in every place of work?

I'd give it within 12 months.

Why don't they just drop all pretences of it being a free society and put CCTV cameras in all our homes, and tag us all so they can track our movements by satellite 24 hours a day?

    Sounds silly?

Who thought 5 years ago that our computer mail and phone texts and conversations would be monitored.

So they want to catch paedophiles, crims and terrorists. Very commendable.

But do they think these people are so stupid as to use forms of communication that will enable them to be monitored and detected?

They will use internet cafes, and proxy servers, and find other devious ways around it.

So ten thousand must suffer such intrusive authorised snooping on the offchance they may catch 4 or 5 wrongdoers.

It is already happening here in the UK, Peggy.

The UK newspaper Daily Mail reported in their December 27th

2009 issue that "Since October 2007, telecoms companies

have been obliged to keep records for a year.

ISP's Internet Service Providers have been required to hold

records on emails and website visits since April".

While I can see the need to protect people from terrorism

it appears that messages such as "Hi Malcky, you are

invited to my party on Monday night, bring a bottle, RSVP"

would be kept on record too!

Big Brother is alive and well and not just in the minds of

    authors such as George Orwell!

I hope they open the contaminated suspicious email that I delete w/o opening.

Think about the long term, crazy implications this has. Taxpayer dollars funding people to scrutinize mail that falls into various degrees of interpretation.

    Here's an example:

The agent opens up mail and he STRONGLY suspects the topic is encoded by amateurs w/ mal intent. Now this person gets paid $20- an hr. to monitor the mail exchange because he thinks it's supicious.

I'm for LESS gov ... not more.

They have used filters for over a decade on our e-mails and postings whether people realized it or not. I tried to post a comment about a demonstration that was black-listed by the media and my browser froze until I erased it. After 3 attempts I decided we are all being monitored on the internet and that was 13 years ago.

Over the 30 years I worked for them I took part in more than a few investigations involving the holding of mail for Federal Marshals, Postal Inspectors, FBI, and local authorities. You are far too late to worry about it now.

Already happens in Australia due to the Cronulla riots a few years ago. It's highly unlikely that any mail, electronic or otherwise will be tampered with unless there is high risk that it would put someone in danger.

Think even taking a hammer to your hard drive, think again. Once typed into your computer it's out there. They know all. Who even knows what could be installed in these computers we purchase. O.K. maybe I am a little paranoid, but nothing would surprise me.
